Motter combines harmony with flashes of insight
by Milla Rosenberg
Columbus-The sizable, smiling crowd at Woody's Bar at the Ohio Union showed the audience was pleased with Angela Motter's two sets of plugged-in acoustic music.
The Atlanta native appeared October 9 as part of "Songs and Slams," an event in the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Ally History Month at Ohio State University.
Interspersed between Motter's two sets was a spoken-word contest, as several people read poems about love, parents, and coming out. The final poet read a piece that had no gender pronouns in it which, as she noted, was very appropriate for the night's performance.
Motter is a transgender singer and songwriter. Her career is on the move: she won a 1999 award from the Gay and Lesbian Mu-
Motter spoke briefly with this writer after her gig.
Milla Rosenberg: When did you begin playing music?
Angela Motter: I started when I was ten years old. And I began playing gigs at age 15.

sic Assocation for her song, "IsltaBoyIsItaGirl." On her latest album, Pleasure and Pain, she collaborated with lesbian songwriter Michelle Malone.
Her songs challenge the listener on a variety of philosophical and social issues, including, but not limited to gender.
Take "My Mama Told Me," a jangly, ramblin' number that speaks for all queer people. In the first verse, she sings, "My mama told me to marry a man with a strong back," a reference to what lesbians and biwomen have heard all too often. Later in the song, her lyrics turn to the unspoken, contradictory codes that transwomen face: "My mama told me you ain't walkin' out of this house with no makeup on... mama told me lots of things she never did say."

When did you first begin to identify as transgender?
I became aware of it in 1991, during a longdistance relationship. My partner was living in San Francisco while I was in Atlanta. The thing is, though, if you look at pictures of me in the mid '80s, I was already performing with makeup and my hair long. Yet when I came out, I came out as butch. I opted not to go on hormones because I thought it would
change my voice, and I spent years taking voice lessons.
Your songs are so complex. Did coming out have an affect on
your songwriting, and did previous songs take on new significance?
Yes, some of the songs address my desires. A lot of identity politics can be reactive, but I find that the more I am just myself, the more I value my own voice, the more that people of all walks of life, straight, gay, young, or old, find meaning in my music. I have had a lot of people write me and say, "Your song gave me the courage to just be me."
I find your music really inspiring. You have so much courage to get up on stage and perform.
Thank you. I have begun speaking to youth groups, at colleges, and at conferences. I feel that I can be the voice for youth who are questioning their gender or just want more information.
